We are coming out of an exciting and historic election season and are now more than 100 days into the Obama presidency. We as Muslims became involved in this election more visibly and with more momentum than in past elections. But, up until this point, we have not been able to capitalize on this momentum to ensure that Muslim Americans are prominent in the Obama administration.
To combat this in the future, Muslim Americans need to be active in public service at the federal, state and local levels. Some will pursue careers in public service from the start of their careers, others will cross over from the private sector. What does it take to be a public service professional? What are the rewards? What are the challenges? For mid-career professionals, what does it take to make that leap of faith?
Panelists: Hazami Barmada (moderator), Nadia Roumani , Amer Ahmad, Jihad Saleh Williams, Rashad Hussain
The universal language of art serves as a catalyst and a conduit for increased understanding and awareness of a culture. Historically, Muslim art and culture worldwide is vibrant, rich and diverse with a great deal of emphasis on beauty (Allah is beautiful and He loves beauty). Traditionally, Muslim art and culture has been reflective of both the best of Islam and the best of local cultures, and Muslim American art should be no different. Expanding the definition of Muslim art and culture to include/embrace contemporary American music, film, theater, art and craft by Muslim artists is critical to the continued development of a strong, comprehensive and multi-faceted Muslim American identity, and to the broader understanding of Islam.

Entrepreneurship is the art and science of making ideas reality. It is an inherently adventurous and risky undertaking with plenty of peaks and valleys. While there is no guarantee of success in any given entrepreneurial venture there are certain qualities, practices, and principles, if followed, that will lead to the eventual success of the entrepreneur, God-willing. The current environment has not only enhanced the attraction of entrepreneurship, but also the intrinsic risks and challenges. This panel has gathered a diverse group of highly successful entrepreneurs from the Muslim community, who will share their wisdom regarding the entrepreneurial experience with a special focus on entrepreneurship in difficult times. This panel will benefit both seasoned entrepreneurs, as well as, those considering taking the plunge.
Panelists: Haaris Ahmad (moderator), Tariq Farid, Sumaya Kazi , Suhail Farooqui
Muslim Americans need to strengthen their policy stance on US policy – both domestic and foreign. In addition to improving and changing US foreign policy towards the Muslim world (critical to us as Muslims), identifying domestic policy platforms that Muslim Americans are willing to ‘own’ is vital to our successful integration into broader American society.
How can Muslim Americans have a balanced, proactive and strategic long-term approach to US policy – at home and abroad?
Panelists: Saeed Khan (moderator), Dr. Sherman (Abd al-Hakim) Jackson, Shirin Tahir-Kheli, Tina Monshipour Foster, Aakif Ahmad, Suhail Khan
